September Fixed Cassette Air Conditioning system repair

When a customer has already resigned themselves to paying out for a new system we are happy to offer a different result, prolonging the inevitable? Maybe, but with equipment delays due to prolonged high demand its good to get a quick result.

System Installation

The indoor AC unit is ceiling mounted 4 way blow cassette, the controller has no fancy LED showing set temperatures or current room temperature, only sliders and a green light to acknowledge demand is present. The unit is without power on arrival, no green lights, no red lights, no error codes, no sign of life.

Manufacture date

1994, not only is that 22 years ago, its also surprising to see the data plate in such a good condition that its actually legible. The information given tells us this system is a 3.5Kw single phase R22 (eek!) with 1.4 Kg of refrigerant. Contrary to some scare mongering it is still legal to operate a system containing R22 refrigerant, the issues arise when it is deemed necessary to question to systems refrigerant level, at the very moment the engineer deems it necessary to check they have effectively condemned the system. You cannot legal connect gauges to check pressures on an R22 system unless you intend to recover for chemical incineration.

Error

The information given to us by the customer was that the system is tripping out at the breaker, there are a handful of items on an AC system which are the usual culprit of Power trips so we always start there, the compressor windings appear normal, the fan motor windings are also good. The system also has a run Capacitor, a very common failure point and easy to test with the right equipment. In this instance we have located the Faulty part, and so long as we don’t need to break the refrigeration cycle to replace it we are good to go.

Repair and testing

A new Capacitor later and a subsequent Trip switch reset and we are back to Icy cool air from out Cassette. Green lights indicate good to go and staff are instructed back into the office and away from Zoom meetings with their feet in the paddling pool at home.

Hand over

For a 22 year old system we are still impressed with its operation, any customer would be happy to get cooling in any shape or form given the recent High 20’s / low 30’s temperatures.
