Project: June 2026 Chiller repair

Just as the hot weather starts the refrigeration packs start to struggle. Even with routine maintenance carried out and with the best will in the world sometimes our equipment just cannot cope with the heat.

Urgent Call out

A Chiller feeding cool water to an AHU system and separate evaporator units in this medical facility is tripping on thermal overload. The chiller itself has a bank of 4 compressors, 2 compressor per circuit. Both circuits are tripped off in the alarm logs.

Dirty coils

One look at the condenser coils is enough to determine air flow is severely restricted and in desperate need of cleaning. The coils were brushed and debris all cleared so as not to be sucked back in by this time tomorrow. These condensers allow access inside large enough for personnel to climb in and clean from the inside out, with a hose pipe in this instance. The coils were thoroughly flushed until the water ran clear and allowed to dry in the 34oC sunshine.

Time to retest

Fault codes reset and HP switches clicked back in the system is put back into operation. High pressures are looking great on both circuits in spite of the high ambient temperatures, the return and flow temperatures are coming down steadily as expected. Alas currently only one compressor from each circuit is running, as soon as the second compressor kicks in, both circuits share the same failure, the head pressure climbs too high for the fans to keep down and back to the trip outs.

(Temporary) Solution

In this instance the only short time fix is to isolate the second compressor for each circuit to keep the High pressure low enough not to trip out, by the next morning the flow and return temperatures are back to normal. When the ambient temps drop the second compressors will be put back into operartion.

Result

Return temperatures have now dropped from a scorching 28 degree c down to a cool 10 degree c. The water flowing to the evaporators is now sufficient to cool the ever important equipment in the stores below, resulting in a very happy customer.
